Cristóbal Balenciaga, the Fashion Collector

April 26th, 2012

Alongside the currently running White Drama by Comme des Garçons, Les Docks serves up another magnificent exhibition, this time calling on the personal, historical archives of Cristóbal Balenciaga himself. The exhibition showcases a collection of Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage, featuring over 70 collected costumes from the 18th, 19th, and 20th century as well as 40 coats and dresses that he designed between 1937 and 1968.

The rich and elegant pieces on display are either from the museum’s own collection or on loan from Maison Balenciaga, as the exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of the designer’s passing. According to fellow fashion grand masters, Coco Chanel praised Cristóbal Balenciaga as being “the only true couturier among us”, while Christian Dior considered him “the master of us all”. Mr.Freedom by William Klein

April 25th, 2012

American expatriate photographer William Klein is iconic in the fashion industry for his time at Vogue from from 1955 to 1965,  but he abandoned photography to focus on film. What an absolute surprise it was to discover his 1969 film Mr.Freedom. The colors are bold and full of comical costuming. Mr.Freedom is sent to France to stop the French Anti-Freedom (FAF) organization.  With so many superheros and comic book characters hitting the big screen, it is fun watching Mr.Freedom in his assemblage of face paint and patriotic football gear. Other colorful characters include Moujik Man, Sami Frey as Christ, Serge Gainsbourg as M. Drugstore, and the Red China Man. Overall, Klein creates a strong aesthetic, but the surprise is his humor, creating a political farce that leads the way for such films as Team America World Police. Although content wise, the film may seem outdated, the American caricatures can still find relevancy today. While it may be considered an obscure film Stateside, it remains cult in France to this day. Anna Barr

The (Under)World of Parentela

April 23rd, 2012

Claudio Parentela is an underground illustrator, painter, photographer, mail artist, cartoonist, and collagist, active many years in the international underground contemporary art scene. Hi s mail art spirit reminds me of Canadian artist collective General Idea. Although he prefers underground rock zines to fashion magazines, his colors and styles that make up is borderline surreal collages seem fittingly in a world made up of Iggy Azaleas and Bernard Weilheims.

Bob Recine: Alchemy of Beauty

April 22nd, 2012

Hair stylist Bob Recine is known for using hair as sculpture. In February his work was on display at The Hole at an exhibition entitled Alchemy of Beauty, following it up on 1st April he launched his book by the same title, photographed by the likes of Mario Sorrenti, Bobbie Fimmano, and Steven Sebrin. Recine has taken hair to new heights, and is the man behind some of the avant-garde hairdos and head dresses worn by Lady Gaga. Other celebrities that he has styled include Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, Angelina Jolie,  Kate Hudson, and Tilda Swinton. Not bad for a career that saw him starting out as an artist until he secured a project creating hairstyles and head ornaments for the windows of Henri Bendel. The book contains original artwork, sketches, collages,  paintings, and images of his sculpture and headdresses. Recine is known for using Play-Doh, mesh wire, cellphone, and even clumps of headphones. “The actual idea comes from the fact that I haven’t done a book” Recine said. “And that I feel the need to explore that aspect of image making and beauty on different levels.”

eau de mer by dan jones aw2012

April 21st, 2012

Australian designer dan jones creates a contrasting spectrum of soft silks, and heavily hand embroidered tulles against a divergence of vivid color, and dramatic tones. His signature look consists of sparkle, and is known for using Swarovski Crystals. The deep sea is a strong forward trend for Autumn/Winter 2012 with collections from Chanel and Alexander McQueen leading the way. But dan jones creates a collection that translates from the runway to the wardrobe effortlessly. His Eau de Mer collection look book touches upon the theme, with photos that take you descending into the twilight of the deep with the collection. The transparent silk mirrors jellyfish in a display of electric blue while weightless tendrils of dress hems drift on currents. Bioluminescent pieces reflect surreptitious predators of the deep ocean.

In Dan’s words “The collection is an exploration of the mysterious nature in which the creatures of the deep dark ocean use displays of bioluminescence and colour to attract their prey. Its about the synergy of dark and light and the intricate relationship that exist between prey and predator”.

April 20th, 2012

Twiggy is and always will be the go-to inspiration for 1960′s mod lovers everywhere. Her iconic Bambi eyes look – long, fawn-like lashes coupled with wide, wonderstruck eyes have been recreated on numerous occasions from runways to editorials to street style hopefuls.

Along with her famous pout, she also set the trend for her time with her side parted pixie bob, that has been sported on numerous celebrities like Carey Mulligan, Emma Watson, and most recently Anne Hathaway for her role in Les Misérables. Undoubtedly, Twiggy will continue being a source of  inspiration for many generations to come. Charin Demay
